Phone Sex: The New Frontier
I’ve been thinking lately about becoming a phone sex operator. It’s something that’s been lurking in the back of my mind for years, but I always thought, “Nahhh…there’s got to be some catch I haven’t thought of. Otherwise, why doesn’t everyone do it?” Afterall, you set your own hours, you can wear whatever you want, the money isn’t bad (not great, but not bad), you work from home, it’s anonymous, it’s a conversation starter, the list goes on and on and on. And what do you do? You talk dirty to people about taboo things. It sounds like it could get gross or boring–but so can every other job, and without all of the benefits listed above. Not to mention, I could work on honing my accents, which according to many phone sex websites, are in great demand.
So where is the catch? I’ve done some reading–some blogs from people who have lived through the nightmare of being a phone sex operator first hand. I was expecting horrific tales of things I never even thought of. To my surprise, though, they all seemed to detail phone calls that I would fully expect. One woman writes, “I was horrified when I received calls from WOMEN! This was not what I was expecting…” That doesn’t surprise me, and I don’t think I would mind. Another woman writes, “I quit the day that I got a call from a man who wanted me to pretend I was a double amputee…” I would just expect strange calls like that. In fact, those would be the calls I think I would look forward to. It would add a little hilarity to my day.
Most of these blogs also noted that they weren’t allowed to talk about things that in real life would be illegal–like bestiality or sex with minors. Which is great–as those are the things I was afraid you would have to talk about.
The biggest complaint among these women, though, was boredom. I can live with boredom. And I say, if you’re bored being a phone sex operator, you would be bored with any other job. I’m the type who is bored with most jobs. This is my lot in life. I may as well be bored as a phone sex operator. At least everyone would THINK I have an interesting job.
What could be better? It would afford me time and money to take acting classes, to write, to look for a different job. But the more I look into it, the more I wonder what it is that I’m missing. Where is the catch? Is it possible that there isn’t one? Is it possible that this is a job like any other–sometimes you have to put up with stuff you don’t like, but mostly it’s boring, and you get a paycheck at the end of the week?
Things are never what they seem. And in this case, I think things might be a lot more mundane than they seem.

If you’d like to read more about the subject there’s an excellent book by Miranda Austin titled ‘Phone Sex: Aural Thrills and Oral Skills’. I read the book and found it fascinating. I had some of the same notions of phone sex for the extra $$$, but just don’t think that I could get through a call without giggling hysterically.
Thanks! I’ll check it out.
